Since 2018, Fjord1 has gradually transitioned from fossil fuels to electric operations. This is the main reason why both energy consumption and emissions are declining.
- Electrification is the single most important measure we have. When we switch from fossil fuels to electricity, we reduce both energy use and emissions at the same time, says Jan Hovden Eide, Energy and Environmental Manager at Fjord1 (pictured below).
Electrification delivers major benefits
In the past, ferries ran on diesel or gas. Now, more and more routes are being electrified—and the benefits are immediate:
- lower energy consumption
- significantly reduced emissions
- quieter and more efficient operations
- Electric ferries use energy far more efficiently. That means we can transport the same number of passengers with fewer resources, says Eide.
Smarter operations – getting more out of every trip
Electrification is the foundation, but optimized operations provide additional impact. Fjord1 continuously works to:
- adjust speed and route patterns
- use automated systems for energy management
- closely monitor vessels and charging infrastructure
- We are constantly working to get the most out of every kilowatt-hour. Small improvements on each trip add up to significant gains over time, says Eide.
The entire value chain matters
Emissions do not only come from day-to-day operations. They also arise when vessels are built and equipment is produced.
That is why Fjord1 also works to:
- set clearer requirements in the procurement chain
- collaborate more closely with suppliers
- extend the lifespan of existing vessels
- The most sustainable vessel is often the one we already have. Upgrades can significantly reduce both resource use and emissions, says Eide.
Better for the environment – locally and globally
The shift to electric operation also brings noticeable environmental benefits along the coast:
- reduced air emissions (NOx and SOx)
- lower risk of pollution
- less impact on nature and the fjord environment
This contributes to cleaner air and more environmentally friendly operations in vulnerable areas.
Small differences for you – major benefits for the environment
For passengers, most things remain the same. The ferry departs on time. You arrive as planned.
But behind the scenes, operations are becoming increasingly energy-efficient—driven by electrification and smart technology.
- Our goal is for customers to experience the same high-quality journey—just more sustainable, concludes the Energy and Environmental Manager.
