| Sognefjellet | The RV 55 Sognefjellet road- across Norway’s roof
Situated in a majestic mountain landscape high up among icy blue peaks and emerald green lakes, the Sognefjellsvegen road runs between the Sognefjord, the world’s longest fjord, and the Gudbrandsdalen valley. The Sognefjellsvegen road became Norway’s first tourist route in 1997 and after renovation in 2003 it was declared a National Tourist Route.
With its highest point at 1,434 metres above sea level, the Sognefjellsvegen road is the highest mountain road in Northern Europe. The road is open during the summer from approx. 1 May until November/December and, with its scenic viewpoints and unique picnic areas decorated by artists, it has been specially designed to meet travellers’ needs.
The Sognefjellsvegen road passes through the Jotunheimen National Park before arriving at the Jostedalsbreen Glacier National Park and the Sognefjord, the world’s longest fjord.
During the summer (mid-June to the end of August), the bus crosses the mountain twice daily in each direction between Sogndal and Otta, where you can also catch a connecting bus for Trondheim or Oslo.
The bus service makes this fantastic walking area of Jotunheimen and Breheimen accessible for tourists from all over the world.
