Experience the world’s most famous fjord;
Geirangerfjorden - member of UNESCO's World Heritage List
May 1 - October 12
The Geirangerfjord, an offshoot of the Sunnylvsfjord, runs for 20 kilometres between Geiranger and Hellesylt. For its whole length the fjord is surrounded by tall, precipitous mountains some towering to more than 1,500 metres. At its deepest the fjord is 200 metres deep.
This ferry cruise on the world’s most famous fjord lasts a bit more than an hour (click here for time schedule and prices). In addition to the almost unbelievably steep mountainsides and the many waterfalls it is the traces of human habitation and toil as evidenced in the many abandoned mountain and shoreside farms that make the most lasting impression. Here the legends are many and history almost tangible. Some of the farms were still inhabited and in operation right up to the 1950s and 1960s.
The sales and other services offered on board are better than ever. We recommend that groups book lunch/dinner in advance.
In Geiranger we highly recommend a visit to the Norwegian Fjord Centre whose fantastic exhibition takes you on a journey from the fjord to the mountains, and gives you a unique insight into an era and way of life that no longer exists.
